Afriforum cleans cemetery in the North
“Removing overgrown grass and trees will help reduce muggings and robberies at the cemetery. Thieves will have nowhere to hide.”
Members of Afriforum North put on their work gloves and cleaned the neglected Pretoria North cemetery as a gesture of respect for the deceased.
Afriforum North chairperson Quentin Meyer said they recently noticed the bad state of the cemetery and decided to do something about it.
“How the cemetery is neglected shocked us and we thought of taking matters into our own hands.
“Our loved ones may be gone but they are not forgotten, we need to look after where they are resting,” Meyer said.
“Removing overgrown grass and trees, Meyer said, will help reduce muggings and robberies at the cemetery.
“Thieves will have nowhere to hide.”

He said the team cleaned up two sections of the cemetery.
“We cleaned the graves of the first residents of Pretoria North, among them, a teacher. We restored their dignity and made sure that their resting place was well,” Meyer said.
“We proceeded to clean the other section where all other people are laid to rest there.”
Meyer said it was sad to see that the dead are no longer respected.
“There are people of all ethnicities buried there, therefore, it is terrible to see that they are not treated with the respect that they deserve.
“Graveyards in other areas are in a fantastic state while ours is in disarray? There is no longer any regard for the deceased, and this is unfortunate.”
Meyer urged people to take a stand rather than wait for the municipality.
“If more community members would take matters of cleaning into their own hands, a huge difference would be made and respect will be shown to those departed.
“I know we pay our rates and taxes, we pay our [for] power and levies and we deserve service delivery but some other things… it is just up to us to stand up rather than wait on the government.”
