Pretoria sergeant’s ex-wife murder case postponed

“The pregnant ex-wife was at the hospital entrance when the suspect allegedly fired several shots and instantly killed her.”

The case against a Silverton police officer accused of shooting his pregnant ex-wife dead has been postponed.

The sergeant, Jonnas Tebogo Mpete (39), was stationed at the rapid rail unit in Silverton and appeared in the Brits magistrate’s court last week.

The case was postponed to July 27.

Mpete had abandoned his bail application, according to NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

“The matter was adjourned for further investigations,” said Mahanjana.

Mpete is accused of having gunned down the pregnant woman, Ntombizodwa Khumalo (35) in the parking area outside a hospital.

He handed himself over to the Brits police on April 5, 2023, for the alleged murder and is reported to be a Ga-Rankuwa resident.

The sergeant had gone to Brits hospital where his ex-wife worked as a switchboard operator, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone.

“The ex-wife was at the hospital entrance when the suspect allegedly fired several shots instantly killing her.”

North West police commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena condemned the incident.

“Once more I urge employees to use the services of the employee health and wellness (EHW) and other professionals, bearing in mind that this is the second incident involving police officers.”

North West department of health MEC Madoda Sambatha said when the incident occurred, the department quickly reacted and requested the hospital management to urgently meet with the affected family.

“The hospital staff was also offered the necessary support and counselling.”
