Provincial health department highlights Hospice Week
The hospice facility are looking forward to their annual candlelight visual this November in which they honour patients that have passed on and extend support to bereaved families.
In honouring Hospice Week (May 5-11), the provincial health department decided to shed light on the importance of hospices by looking at one from Pretoria West.
In a statement, the department said the week “highlights the importance of an effective partnership between family members, carers, service providers, funders, government departments and other stakeholders as vital to the provision of quality care.”
Leratong Hospice in Atteridgeville, extension 16 is one of the many centres nationwide that specialises in the treatment of terminally ill patients.
The department believes highlighting the services the hospice offers will give direction to those in need of such treatment.
Leratong’s immediate community is Atteridgeville but general manager Shonisani Netshikweta said that the help they offer goes beyond their locals.
“We also assist patients from neighbouring communities such as Pretoria Central, West, Mamelodi, and even as far as Johannesburg. We don’t turn away patients if they need our services and if those needs fall under the services we provide,” Netshikweta stated.
The facility said that the services provided go beyond the physical needs of a patient but also cover the spiritual, psychological and psychosocial needs of a terminally ill patient.
The hospice and other facilities of its nature are compliant with Hospice Palliative Care Association (HPCA) as well as the health department.
The department provides support financially, through human resources (healthcare workers to care for patients), and through technical support as well.
“The care doesn’t stop after the patient has died, we ensure that we support the surviving family through counselling and other services we provide,” Netshikweta continued.

In discharging a patient, families are taught supportive skills they can use for home treatment in addition to the hospice working with local clinics and hospital teams that specialise in home care as well.
Patients must be referred to by their medical practitioners or fellow hospice centre before being granted admittance.
