SAAF Museum Airshow hits Centurion skies

According to a statement from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), approximately 60 000 people checked in at the event.

The annual South African Air Force Museum Airshow, with the theme ‘Taking off to new frontiers’, was held on Saturday, May 6 at the Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing (formerly the Air Force Base Swartkop).

The show was hosted by the South African Air Force Museum with exciting displays and exhibitions.

The airshow was preceded by a youth development programme the day before, where high school learners could explore various career options in aviation.

The learners were also treated to a preview of the action as various aircraft performed their validation flights for the airshow on Saturday.

“The public and scholars were amazed by the knowledge of the army and the air force shared a role to protect and defend the South African Air space, which brought more interest and attention to the Air Defence Artillery Prime Mission Equipment,” said a SANDF spokesperson, Second Lieutenant Dikeledi Sheron Khoza, from the South African Army Air Defence Artillery.

“The communicators were proud to share their experience as the ground-based Air Defence Corps, also the specification and capability of their Prime Mission Equipment.”

The show was the first following a two-year hiatus, with thousands arriving with cooler boxes, camping chairs and umbrellas to enjoy the event with their family and friends.

Deon Coetzee, who works on various projects at the Mobile Deployment Wing and has been attending air shows here for 20 years, said that the show exceeded his expectations.

“The show on Saturday was spot-on, and for first-timers, it was a day they will never forget,” said Coetzee.
