Delayed opening of newly built Mandisa clinic frustrates residents
“We travel a great distance for us to get health assistance, while there is one on our doorstep.”
Hammanskraal residents are up in arms at the delay in the opening of the newly built Mandisa clinic.
Katleho Montsho, a resident, told the Rekord that the community struggles to get access to health facilities while there was one on their doorstep.
“We travel a great distance to get health assistance. The clinic that we go to can only accommodate so much, what bothers me a lot is that you stay there for the whole day,” Montsho said.
He further said that the GP health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko promised last year that the clinic would open soon but to date it remained non-operational.
Treatment Action Campaign member Rebecca Maluleke said the community was concerned over the delay because had promised that she would open the clinic this year.
“Some of the issues the community was complaining about the other clinic was that every time they go there, they needed to open a new file because they were not from the area,” Maluleke said.
She further said what was of great concern was that the staff at the clinic took a decision not to provide medication to high blood pressure patients.
Provincial health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the opening was delayed because his department was awaiting the approvals of other departments involved in the project.
“Our sister department of infrastructure development is currently addressing the requirements by the Tshwane metro (to install traffic lights in Hammans Street).
The outstanding approvals include that by environmental and waste management in Tshwane,” said Modiba.
He further said upon receiving the necessary documents the metro would then issue his department the occupation certificate to allow for the facility to open.
