House engulfed in flames in Pretoria east
“Everyone got out before the whole house was engulfed by flames. No injuries or deaths have been reported,” says Dean Slater the spokesperson of SVTA-Lifemed.
A house caught fire on Thursday night in Faerie Glen, east of Pretoria.
Local paramedic service SVTA-Lifemed responded to the scene at 21:30.
Spokesperson of SVTA -Lifemed Dean Slater said the fire started at 21:30 and final vehicles withdrew around 02:00.
“Everyone got out before the whole house was engulfed by flames. No injuries or deaths have been reported,” he added.

Tshwane emergency service spokesperson Charles Mabaso said when firefighters arrived on the scene a thatched roofed house was on fire and they immediately started with firefighting.
“The fire was subsequently extinguished. The cause has not yet been determined,” Mabaso added.
Mabaso said most house fires are a result of improper use of heating sources when temperatures are down.

He urged residents to do the following to avoid fire:
– Place heaters at least 1m away from flammable materials. Make sure the floor and nearby walls are properly insulated.
– Keep open flames away from walls, furniture, drapery and other flammable items.
– Have the electrical wiring in the home inspected by an electrician.
– Inspect extension cords for frayed or exposed wires.
– Do not overload extension cords or outlets.
– Never go to bed with an imbawula (brazier) inside the house.
– Ensure that the hot ash is completely cooled off.
In addition Mabaso said it is also important to note the risks posed by load-shedding and mitigate against them resulting in home fires by:
– Ensuring that all electrical heating equipment is switched off before one goes to bed or leaves the house in case the power returns.
– Install a device to help in minimising power surges.
“In case one installs alternative power sources like solar energy, they must ensure that:
– The installation is carried out by a suitably qualified installer.
– A certificate of compliance is issued.
– If the type of solar panels leave space between the panels and the roof, ensure that debris such as leaves and papers are not trapped therein.
“The list of actions we can take to safeguard our homes from fires is inexhaustible. It is upon every individual to be considerate of their personal safety, safety of their loved ones and hard earned assets,” Mabaso concluded.
