Local NGO helps addict kick the habit
“He is off the methadone treatment for drugs and is currently in rehabilitation and doing psychological workshops. He should be out by the first week of June or in the middle of June.”
A local NGO recently helped an addict in the north of Pretoria kick the drug abuse habit.
Founder of Angels of the North, Vitest KP Hurinanthan said the man is now doing brilliantly.
“He is off the methadone treatment for drugs and is currently in rehabilitation and doing psychological workshops. He should be out by the first week of June or in the middle of June.”
The NGO started off by feeding the needy every Wednesday – it grew from a few to a 100 people a week.
It wanted to get to the root of all the problems in the community that cause drug abuse and unemployment.
“The unemployment rate creates a lot of other problems, with unemployment comes drug abuse that hides hunger, the pain and homelessness.
“Drugs are also the root cause of all this. If we can help kick the habit and show them there is help, they can then build themselves up,” said Hurinanthan.
The NGO works hand-in-hand with the Life Changing Projects that offers shelter, social services then refers to other stakeholders that are dealing mainly with drug abuse.
Other stakeholders include Hopeline and Cosup in Sunnyside and Daspoort clinic.
“As the Life Changing Projects, we mainly focus on sheltering, social services conducted by our social workers, then refer the men to stakeholders that deal with drug abuse patients as we are not a rehabilitation centre,” said project manager, Tebogo Mpufane.
“At the moment we are currently housing 180 men at the shelter,” said Mpufane.
Hurinanthan said unfortunately not all drug abusers accept the help.
“One ran away from the rehabilitation centre after only 24 hours,” he said.
He said that he will be sending out posters soon so people can send in their loved ones to get help.
