Online support group sessions for persons living with HIV/Aids
SADAG says that their support groups offer “a safe space of trust and confidentiality to explore life’s ups and downs.”
Residents living with HIV/Aids are invited to participate in a recently launched virtual support group.
The mental health support group is organised by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) and plans to meet every first and third Wednesday of every month from 19:00 – 20:00 via WhatsApp.
SADAG released a statement, stating that their support groups offer “a safe space of trust and confidentiality to explore life’s ups and downs.”
One of the attendees, Louise Kotsokoane had the following to say after attending her first session:
“The benefits of being part of a group of this nature when I was first diagnosed was so helpful. When I first joined I believed that I had been handed a death sentence.
It was only when I started attending a support group and heard other people’s stories and started receiving the correct information about my condition that I began to have hope.
It was here that I was empowered to live with my condition and continue to live my life.
The group provides mental and emotional support to members living with HIV/Aids
“It especially lends support to those who are newly diagnosed by hearing the lived experiences of the older members. It is a platform where people aren’t isolated, where they know they belong, their voices can be heard, and they know that they will receive unconditional support,” Kotosokoane further explained.
