Crime statistics: Pretoria stations on top 30 crime-plagued list

Local stations Temba, Akasia, Brooklyn, Pretoria Central and Sunnyside made the top 30 police stations plagued by serious crime nationally.

Tshwane’s Temba, Akasia, Brooklyn, Pretoria Central and Sunnyside police stations made the list of top 30 police stations plagued by serious crime nationally, according to the latest crime statistics released by police minister Bheki Cele.

The statistics, which cover the period from January to March 2023 also show an increase in serious crimes reported at several Tshwane police stations.

Between January and March 2023, there was a 3.4% national increase in murder compared to the same period last year.

Over the past three months, 6 289 persons have been slain by a gun, knife, sharp and blunt object, stone, or even just bare hands.

While violent crimes including armed robberies, hijackings and related crimes were also on the rise in Tshwane.

CRIME STATISTICS FOR LOCAL STATIONS

Akasia station in the north of Pretoria recorded a staggering 68.8% increase in rapes.

The station has 27 rape cases compared to 16 in Jan-March 2022.

The Akasia station showed a significant 90% drop in illegal firearms.

Some parts of the east of Pretoria recorded an increase in so-called “contact” crimes such as murder, attempted murder and sexual offences as well as common assault and robbery.

Boschkop police station had a 50% increase in murders while recording a 28.6 % drop in sexual offences.

Brooklyn police station recorded two murders compared to the zero of the previous quarter.

The station also registered great improvement with a 100% decrease in attempted murders compared to the three cases of January 2022.

The station had a 4.7% increase in “trio” crimes (car hijacking, robbery at residential and non-residential premises).

Garsfontein station had a 56.8% decrease in trio crimes, recording only 16 cases in the first three months of this year.

The station saw a 66.7% drop in murders and a 50% increase in assaults with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

Laudium station recorded a 78.6% increase in trio crimes – 25 cases compared to 14 in the 2022 quarter.

The station recorded a 75% drop in murders.

MINISTER VOWS TO FIGHT CRIME

Cele said that Operation Shanela, which is the national expansion of Gauteng’s five-year-old Operation O Kae Molao, intends to reduce crime by increasing resources and putting more officers on the ground.

“The top 30 stations with the highest crime statistics will receive R65-million to fight murder and other contact crimes.

“Beyond this, extra financing, we are also directly addressing community requests to strengthen the capacity and training of tactical response teams.

“The buying of more police vehicles has been budgeted for at close to R2-billion to increase police visibility,” he said.

He said the SAPS will be recruiting more than 9 000 people to strengthen the force.
