Pretoria students to jet off to US on scholarship
“I think as young people, we need exposure to the agricultural sector”.
Two lucky local students have scored a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study in the United States.
Jacoberth Malatji and Thembi Mosimango were announced as winners of the scholarship.
They will study early childhood development (ECD) and animal science in agriculture respectively.
The announcement was made at Fire & Ice in Menlyn last week Friday.
EXPOSURE FOR STUDENTS
Mosimango of Mabopane said she would study animal science in agriculture at Kirkwood community college.
“I’m really excited about that because I think I’m going to learn more and come back and teach people, especially young people.
“I think as young people, we need exposure to the agricultural sector,” she added.
Mosimango said young women needed to know more about the agricultural sector as there were fewer women in the industry.
She said she noticed that many people were leaving the agricultural space for the suburban lifestyle.
“I want to come back and teach the youth. I want to give them exposure at a young age and also grow my business so I can employ more people because unemployment is a big issue in our country.”
LEARNING NEW TECHNIQUES
Malatji of Soshanguve will jet off to Fox Valley technical college in Appleton to study ECD to equip herself with the different methods of developing and empowering the young ones.
“What I’ll be studying is ECD, where I will be learning new techniques.
As we know that the education systems in South Africa and America are different, I will be learning new techniques on how to develop the next generation.
So I am excited to be learning about all of that and coming back to create new channels and direction for our kids here in South Africa.”
STUDENTS TO SPEND UP TO ONE ACADEMIC YEAR
US embassy global bureau of public affairs Chris Marais said the programme sought to provide scholarships to students to spend up to one academic year at a United States community college.
“Participants build technical skills and may earn certificates in their fields of study.
Through professional internships, service learning and community engagement activities, participants strengthen English language proficiency and immerse themselves in the culture and day-to-day life in the US,” said Marais.
He said the fields for the scholarship are applied engineering, business, ECD, information technology, media, public safety and tourism/hospitality.
After completing their studies, students must return to contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.
Students are expected to depart on July 20.
