Contact crimes has decreased in Mamelodi, crime stats show
However, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased by 100% from 10 to 20 cases.
Contact crimes dropped by 21.1% in the Mamelodi East police precinct compared to last year, according to the latest crimes statistics released on Tuesday by police minister Bheki Cele.
However, sexual offences showed an increase of 33.3%, whereby 44 cases were reported last year and this year it has increased to 60 cases.
Cele said Operation Shanela, which is the national expansion of Gauteng’s five-year-old Operation O Kae Molao, intends to reduce crime by increasing resources and putting more officers on the ground.
“The top 30 stations with the highest crime statistics will receive R65-million to fight murder and other contact crimes.
“Beyond this extra financing, we are also requesting communities to strengthen their capacity and training of tactical response teams.
“More police vehicles have been budgeted for at close to R2-billion to increase police visibility,” he said.
Other crimes that have increased:
– Rape cases rose from 39 to 52 cases – an increase of 33.3%.
– Sexual assault cases increased from 5 to 7 cases an increase of 40.0%.
Crimes that have decreased include:
– The number of murder cases reported stayed the same: 23.
– Attempted murder decreased by 48.5% from 33 to 17 cases.
– Malicious property damage decreased by 9.3% from 140 to 127 cases.
– Assault with the intent to inflict grievous body harm decreased by 7.8% from 177 to 169 cases.
Regarding crimes as a result of police action:
– Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased by 100% from 10 to 20 cases.
– Drug-related crime increased by 5.6% from 197 to 298 cases.
– Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs decreased by 68.5% from 89 to 28 cases.
Cele concluded the SAPS will be recruiting more than 9 000 people to strengthen the force.
