Moot crime statistics show increase in robberies and hijackings

Burglaries at non-residential premises are a problem in the area with a 33% increase.

Police released the crime statistics for the fourth quarter, and police stations in Moot have yet again reported a general increase in crime.

Villieria police station reported a marginal decrease in crime, however cases of aggravated robbery remain a problem.

Car hijackings have increased the most, from two last year to 14 this year since January.

Robberies at residential premises doubled from two to four cases, while robberies at non-residential premises jumped up as well.

Reports of violent crimes including murder, common assault and common robbery increased slightly, while the station reported an overall decrease in sexual offences.

There has been a drop in arson and malicious damage to property reports.

Burglaries at non-residential premises, a problem in the area, increased to 33%.

However, the station reported a decrease in cases of burglary at residential premises and thefts out of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Crime detected as a result of police action has unfortunately decreased.

The Eersterust police station has shown a slight increase in violent crimes and robberies.

Attempted murder increased by one case.

Common assault and robbery saw a marginal increase.

One additional case of rape was reported, but there has been an overall decrease in sexual violence.

Residents will be happy to hear that there has been a decrease in car hijackings and robberies at non-residential properties, and only one more residential robbery.

Cases of malicious damage to property decreased to 36.1%.

Residents should remain vigilant as the station has reported an increase in burglaries at residential premises and theft of motor vehicles.

The Villieria police station offered the following safety tips for residents to follow:

Hijackings:
– Do not pick up hitchhikers, particularly when driving alone.
– Avoid distractions such as being on your phone, or drinking and driving, etc.
– Raise your awareness at intersections – always keep a look out for people loitering around your car or for any sudden activity around your car.

House robberies:
– Always be on the lookout for suspicious persons and vehicles.
– Enhance security through fitting access doors with security gates and install burglar bars on windows.
– Request neighbours to keep an eye on your home when you are away for an extended period.
– Do not open the gate or door to strangers.
– Verify the details of anyone before you employ them and check the authenticity of a contractor before you give them access to your property.

Business robberies:
– Do not keep too much money on the business premises.
– Be on the lookout for suspicious customers.
– Business owners must not open for anyone after the business has closed.
