Local NGO launches outdoor library for residents
"We live in a time of enlightenment but we are consumed by too much entertainment, information is power but we lack the power to make use of the tools we have to access information,"-Madisha
Ponelopelo community development, an Atteridgeville NGO, launched its outdoor library on Saturday, May 27.
Founder Jacob Madisha said that the vision is simple, “making knowledge fashionable again”.
“We live in a time of enlightenment but we are consumed by too much entertainment, information is power but we lack the power to use the tools we have to access information,” he said.
The launch was held at Mnandi Mall, and many residents gathered as witnesses.

The NGO offers residents free books including novels and academic books, it also assists with assignments and exam preparation and offers free tutorial classes for Grades 1 to 12.
IMPACT OF OUTDOOR LIBRARY ON STUDENTS
Lesedi Segaetsho, a grade 12 student said the outdoor library is going to have a positive impact on her a lot because of the free tutorial classes.
“Since we are approaching the mid-year examination, this outdoor library will help me prepare and I will be able to borrow academic books that I may need for my school work,” she said.
Madisha added that the youth spend so much time on social media instead of growing their wisdom account, and as much as there are trends on social media they also want to make reading and writing a trend for the youth.
The NGO also teaches residents to read and write.
Thulisile Tshabalala, a local, said the library will play an important role in supporting education and literacy because it offers countless resources such as educational materials.
“The residents can access our outdoor library on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 13:00 to 18:00, and those students who want assistance with college and university applications are welcome,” said Madisha.
