Plan to replace old water pipes in north of Pretoria under way
Old asbestos pipes are prone to bursts and there are too many leaks in the area.
The city is currently replacing old asbestos water pipes in the North of Pretoria with high-density polyethene (HDP) pipes.
Old asbestos pipes are prone to bursts, which lead to water shortages and maintenance shutdowns.
Community members told Rekord that the north has too many water pipe leaks with thousands of litres of water going to waste.
“The HDP pipes are strong,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
“They have a high tensile strength and impact resistance meaning the city won’t have to deal with too many water leaks.
“We have noted several factors causing the old asbestos water pipe to burst such as the location of the pipe.
“The high traffic volume which can cause the ground to be unstable as well as varying pressures in the system cause the asbestos to leak.
“But with these new pipe systems leaks and bursts will be a thing of the past.
“We are sure that residents won’t have leaks and water will be saved,” Mashigo ascertained.
Mashigo urged residents to continue reporting water leaks to the municipality.
“The community must alert the municipality when water pipes burst. This is very important. The sooner a pipe is fixed, the better.
“They can report on the city’s call centre number 012 358 9999 or any walk-in customer care centre.”
