Tshwane sends condolences to N1 truck fire victim

Tshwane’s MMC for community safety has sent condolences to the family of the truck driver who perished in an Centurion accident on Monday.

“On behalf of the city, I would therefore like to express my condolences and sympathy to the driver’s family, friends and colleagues,” Grandi Theunissen said on Tuesday.

Theunissen thanked members of the Tshwane emergency services for their swift and sterling work on the day.
He said valuable lessons should be drawn from this unfortunate incident, adding that it should propel personnel to work better and effectively in the future.
“I once again applaud all role players who acted swiftly and professionally in their response and echo the adage that teamwork makes the dream work.
“Let us all learn valuable lessons from this unfortunate accident and strive to do even better the next time.”
The tragic accident occurred last night in Centurion where a truck driver lost control of his vehicle, crashed and burst into flames.
Emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said a team firefighters contained the fire, then found human remains believed to be that of a driver.
“Human remains believed to be of the driver were burnt beyond recognition in the cab of the tanker,” said Mabaso.
“The tanker was reported to have been carrying 40 000 litres 93 octane petrol at the time of the accident.”
A Tshwane environmental management practitioner and spill-cleaning company were called to the scene.
“Water drainage systems were closed to contain the runoff before the fire was doused off with firefighting foam from two hose lines and a master stream from an industrial firefighting truck,” said Mabaso.
He said two fire engines, two water tankers, a ladder truck, mobile command unit and multiple support vehicles were dispatched to the scene.
The MMC thanked all stakeholders who worked hand in hand with emergency services in making sure that the situation was brought under control.
