"Within 36 hours of a truck fire on the N1 North near Botha Avenue the road surface was repaired and redone."
Tshwane residents welcomed the metro’s swift response in cleaning up after a truck exploded on the N1 north near Botha Avenue earlier this week.
“Within 36 hours, the road surface was repaired and redone,” resident Marlize Grobler posted on Facebook on Wednesday.
“Well done,” she wrote. “There is still South African pride.”
The truck driver sadly died and was burnt beyond recognition in the accident on Monday evening.
TSHWANE EMERGENCY SERVICES
Community safety MMC Grandi Theunissen also thanked Tshwane emergency services for their “swift and sterling work”.
Valuable lessons can be drawn from the unfortunate incident, according to Theunissen.
He said that it should propel personnel into working better and effectively in the future.
“I once again applaud all role players who acted swiftly and professionally in their response and echo the adage that teamwork makes the dream work.
“Let us all learn valuable lessons from this unfortunate accident and strive to do even better the next time.”
He also extended his condolences to the truck driver’s family.
The truck was carrying 40 000 litres of 93-octane petrol at the time.
After the fire was extinguished, an environmental management and spill-cleaning company was called to the scene.
“Water drainage systems were closed to contain the runoff before the fire was doused with firefighting foam from two hose lines and a master stream from an industrial firefighting truck,” said Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso.
Two fire engines, two water tankers, a ladder truck a mobile command unit and multiple support vehicles were dispatched to the scene.
