“A further two patients, a toddler, and an adult were treated for minor to moderate injuries and transported to the hospital”.
Two adults and a toddler died in a recent collision on the N1 north near Atterbury, Menlyn.
In a video circulating on social networks, a car is seen driving against oncoming traffic on the other side of the median barriers before crashing head-on into another vehicle.
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso confirmed the incident but could not say why the VW Polo was on the wrong side of the motorway.
“Two passengers were immediately declared dead on the scene by paramedics. Two other adults and a toddler received emergency medical treatment for critical injuries.
“The toddler unfortunately later succumbed to injuries while receiving emergency medical treatment on the scene,” Mabaso said.
He said when paramedics arrived on the scene, three people were still trapped in the mangled vehicles.
“A further two people – a toddler and an adult – were treated for minor to moderate injuries then transported to hospital.”
Mabaso said a total of seven people were involved in the accident.
Road operator South African National Road Agency (Sanral) confirmed the accident to Rekord.
Operations and maintenance manager Madoda Mthembu said his department was aware of the incident.
“The maintenance team is aware of the unfortunate incident involving a vehicle that was driving on the oncoming traffic on the N1 on June 4, causing an accident,” Mthembu said.
On why the Polo driver was driving on the wrong side of the motorway, Mthembu said the agency dealt only with maintaining and cleaning the road.
