Memorial service to honour fallen sergeant
A candle-light memorial service was held at Mamelodi community hall to remember the much-loved officer.
Mamelodi police together with CPF, Tshwane district women’s network and colleagues came together to celebrate the life of Sergeant Victoria Mtshweni who died on June 5 after a short illness.
They held a memorial service at Mamelodi West community hall where they lit white candles and laid a wreath in remembrance of her.
Sergeant Victoria Mtshweni, of Hammanskraal, joined the SAPS in 2009, worked at the head office before moving to Mamelodi to join the social crime unit in 2022.
Acting station commander Colonel Simon Matome Makgopa said Mamelodi police had lost a loyal, dedicated and special soul.
He said the police thanked her family for opening its heart to allow its beloved daughter to serve the force.
Makgopa said candle lighting “is a tribute to our best friend, colleague sister and the people sitting in the hall are not only her colleagues but also her friends”.
Makgopa said Mamelodi police will never be the same again.
Some of her duties in the social crime unit included visiting schools and pre-schools to talk to children about their rights.
Colleague Sergeant Dapheny Maila said Sergeant Mtshweni was a loyal member, not just coming to work for a salary but to share her joy with other police officers.
“She worked a lot with pre-school and school children about their rights as children, human trafficking, bullying and the dangers of using drugs.
“Children knew not to accept gifts from strangers and always listened to their parents and teachers because of her,” said Maila.
The community of Mamelodi, colleagues and other stakeholders were encouraged not to give up but to carry on fighting crime and join hands.
Mamelodi police expressed shock at her sudden death.
Sergeant Mtshweni will be missed by her family, colleagues and the community of Mamelodi and will be laid to rest at the weekend in Hammanskraal.
