Metro launches science laboratory in Atteridgeville
“Through the science laboratory, learners of Hofmeyer will be able to develop practical scientific reasoning abilities and self-directed learning for the first time, and they will be able to investigate chemical properties and reactions,” says the MMC.
The Tshwane metro and partners recently launched a new 42-seat science laboratory at Hofmeyr secondary school in Atteridgeville.
The department of economic development and spatial planning says the effort is part of Youth Month celebrations and phase three of a social labour project looking to launch school laboratories in Tshwane townships.
“Through the science laboratory, learners of Hofmeyer will be able to develop practical scientific reasoning abilities and self-directed learning for the first time, and they will be able to investigate chemical properties and reactions,” said MMC for the department, Hannes Coetzee.
Other organisations involved in the effort include Gauteng education, Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and strategic partner, PPC.
The launch is part of the economic development and spatial planning’s social labour plans facilitation outreach campaign that seeks to make Tshwane a business-friendly city.
“The main donor of the science laboratory, PPC Mooiplaas, employs about 504 people, most of whom are from different parts of Tshwane, and provides benefits to 180 contractors. In Tshwane, PPC has a 130-year historical legacy,” Coetzee continued.
The outreach campaign is said to be able to benefit several critical areas. With further discussions and cooperation, phase three of the social labour plan is expected to include sector skills development.
The MMC expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders involved.
“I want to thank the management of PPC Mooiplaas for their unwavering dedication to carrying out social labour plan projects in Tshwane and to remind the business community that Tshwane is open and welcoming to business.
“I would also like to thank other stakeholders from the government for the support they provided to make this project a success,” Coetzee concluded.
