Local drum majorettes desperately need funds to travel

Mamelodi drum majorettes team needs funds to travel to Cape Town for the nationals cheerleading majorettes.

A local drum majorettes team has qualified to participate in the National Federation of dance drill cheerleading majorettes of SA in July.

However, Talent Angels Team (TAT) drum majorettes from Mamelodi need financial assistance for transportation, accommodation for seven days, food and competition fee.

Founder and coach of TAT Angel Tshabalala said the team needs funds for the competition that will take place at the Wynberg military base stadium in Cape Town from July 6 to 12.

She said the team consists of around 22 girls and five boys aged six to 22 years from challenging and low socio-economic backgrounds.

“The team give girls and boys from our different communities an opportunity for enjoyment, empowerment and the promotion of self-esteem through the medium of dance, as well as training professional dancers and developing a unique, indigenous dance company,” said Tshabalala.

On June 17 the team attended the drum majorettes competition at Krugerdorp Noord Laerskool where they qualified for the nationals and won two trophies.

“TAT is urgently seeking sponsors to provide a safe, contained and positive environment for children as they come from different backgrounds.

“These young girls have discovered that their passion is being a majorette,” she said.

“It has given them something to work towards and learning about team spirit.”

She added they have been working extremely hard and shown their dedication and passion for this sport in a very short period.

Founded as a non-profit organisation in 2003, TAT is committed to enhancing quality of life for underprivileged communities through the provision of a cohesive and sustainable programme of integrated and quality development services.

“The team’s vision is to accommodate and give unlimited young ladies in our surrounding area the opportunity to participate in drum majorettes, gymnastic cheerleading, sarafina, cultural dance, beauty contest and drill dance,” she said.

Tshabalala said they want to build up the self-confidence of the girls, teach them how to be more disciplined, improve their concentration and form them into a well-established team.

“They have been working extremely hard and shown their dedication and passion for this sports in a very short period.

“It is our goal as a drum majorettes team to build a lasting relationship with anyone who wish to be involved in the development of young ladies in the sport and wish to make our sponsor proud. We would like to contribute successfully in the marketing and visibility of the sponsor to a wide audience,” she said.

Tshabalala asked for sponsorship to help the team with pom-poms at R180 per athlete and a new uniform at the cost of R8 000.

“My mission is to provide children from challenging and low socio-economic communities the opportunity for enjoyment, empowerment and the promotion of self-esteem through the medium of dance, as well as training professional dancers and developing a unique, indigenous dance company.”
