MMC concerned cleaning up TMPD getting pushback

"The TMPD's image has been tarnished by the rogue crooks among them."

The Tshwane community safety MMC is concerned about the TMPD reluctance to bring “rogue” officers among their ranks to heel.

“I am deeply concerned as there is active resistance against measures being put in place to restore discipline, command, control and ethics within the metro police,” said MMC Grandi Theunissen.

“[These] various directives and other internal measures have been implemented by the acting police chief Basil Nkhwashu with my full support.”

MOTORISTS BEING VICTIMISED BY TMPD

The measures came after a rise in the number of motorists being victimised by TMPD officers.

The measures are focused on ensuring a safe, ethical and disciplined working environment for the benefit of the public and the TMPD, according to Theunissen.

He said what concerned him more about the reluctance was the alleged involvement of some Samwu representatives in what “can only be described as support of criminal activities and smear campaigns against the acting chief of police”.

“I would have expected the unions to welcome the interventions, which are aimed at improving their members’ working conditions and reputation and constructively engage the city and the acting police chief in this process,” said Theunissen.

CO-MANAGE THE TMPD

Unfortunately, some union representatives seem determined to create and embed the perception that they and their members were quite happy with the status quo, to the detriment of the city and its residents.

Theunissen said he was “disheartened” by the active and passive resistance to these measures.

“I would have liked to see the whole senior management rally around the chief in his efforts to address misbehaviour and restore the TMPD and its members’ image, which has been tarnished by the rogue crooks among them.

“While I respect the union and the role that it plays, I want to caution against attempts to co-manage the TMPD.

“However, we do welcome constructive engagement concerning these matters.

Lastly, I want to assure our residents that the process to clean up the TMPD continues with the mayor’s full support,” he concluded.
