Safe winter holiday programme for Mams learners

The aim of the programme is to keep children busy and off the streets during the school holidays and it has been running for years.

A local organisation is planning on keeping school children and youth in Mamelodi constructively busy this winter school holiday.

The Thandanani Drop Inn Centre project will care for children from the age of 5 from June 24 to July 18, the school holiday period.

Thandanani winter school head Zodwa Mhlanga said they are working with six teachers, staff members and volunteers on the programme.

She said the programme aims to keep children busy and off the streets during the school holidays, and it has been running for years.

The learners and youth are kept busy with a line-up of different daily activities from 10:00 to 16:00.

“The programme is looking after the children and feeding them for free while their parents are still at work.”

She said parents are also expected to sign an indemnity form that includes divulging their child’s allergies.

Parents also need to sign their child in every morning and out in the afternoon when they fetch them.

“Thandanani gives children breakfast and a freshly cooked meal for lunch before they go back to their loved ones,” said Mhlanga.

The learners are kept busy the whole day with indigenous games, fun day, colour picnic, bake a meal, bring and share, sports day, amazing race, playing cheers, trip to OR Tambo airport and Mr and Miss Thandanani.

Since the winter school holiday started, the number of parents bringing their children to Thandanani has increased.
