Body of high school learner found on school’s rugby field

A visibly devastated grandfather of the learner was on the scene but couldn't provide much detail other than the learner had left her home around midnight the night before.

The lifeless body of a Grade 10 learner has been discovered on the rugby field of Hoërskool Garsfontein.

The discovery of the girl’s body was made on Tuesday morning by a security guard, Rekord was told on the scene.

At this stage, details about the incident are very limited. It is unclear how the learner died.

According to the girl’s visibly devastated grandfather, she had left the house around midnight.

“I don’t know why she came here or what might have happened to her,” the grandfather said.

According to Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona, the education MEC, Matome Chiloane, was startled by the news.

Mabona said police were still at the scene on Tuesday morning conducting their investigations.

“The learner’s family is also at the school and will receive the necessary support from our psycho-social support team,” he added.

Mabona said it was unclear at this stage how the body ended up on the school ground because the property is locked overnight.

“We call upon the police to urgently apprehend the perpetrators. We also extend our sincerest condolences to the family and the school community at large,” said MEC Chiloane.

Mabona further said that the MEC is expected to visit the school later on Tuesday.
