UP says it’s business as usual after recent generator explosion

Tuks spokesperson, Sthembinkosi Tlale has recently stated that the situation has been resolved and there’ll be no disturbances to campus runnings.

The University of Pretoria (UP) has recently announced that the damage caused by Wednesday’s generator explosion has been fully resolved.

Tshwane emergency services responded to a report about a generator on fire at UP campus in Lynnwood, Hatfield on July 5 after receiving the call at approximately 08:42.

The report stated that a standby generator exploded and caught fire on the campus’s economic and management science side.

A fire engine and a ladder truck were immediately dispatched to the incident. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find one of two generators on fire and immediately began firefighting operations.

There were no students or staff members that suffered injury, and the fire is said to have done no structural damage to nearby building.

The impact of the loss of one of the generators had not been communicated at the time, however, Tuks spokesperson, Sthembinkosi Tlale recently stated that the situation has been resolved and there’ll be no disturbances to campus activity.

“We can confirm that a generator on our campus caught fire.

“We want to assure everyone that the situation was quickly brought under control, and no one was placed in any danger.

“Our efficient emergency response team promptly doused the fire, and we are pleased to inform you that the incident has been fully resolved. The campus remains safe and secure, and all activities will continue as scheduled,” Tlale said.

“The necessary precautions have been taken to ensure the ongoing safety of our staff, students, and visitors.”

The exact cause of the explosion is still currently under investigation.
