Soshanguve water nightmare likely to end this week

The metro says according to Rand Water maintenance is expected to be completed on July 22.

The water shortage nightmare will soon end for Soshanguve residents as maintenance at Rand Water’s Hartebeeshoek reservoir is likely to end this week.

Areas in Soshanguve blocks L, H, M, K, G, LKK and D have been hit with water cutbacks for the past two weeks.

Maintenance work started on Tuesday, July 12.

The metro confirmed that the maintenance work is likely to be completed this weekend.

“The latest update from Rand Water is that work will be completed on Saturday, July 22,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

However, as work is still in progress, the Soshanguve and Mabopane reservoirs are still struggling to pick up.

“There is no improvement so far in terms of the flow to the reservoirs,” Mashigo said.

Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink has pointed out that the maintenance by the water utility is the cause of the dry taps.

“We have a serious water outage due to the utility’s short-notice maintenance.”

He said that water tankers were deployed.

“We know this is not a permanent solution but it is a form of relief and with the consultations with the utility this issue is being attended to,” he said.

Watch: MMC Themba Fosi at the Hartebeeshoek reservoir :

Utility services MMC Themba Fosi did an oversight visit at the Hartebeeshoek reservoir recently, but he and other local councillors could not enter the premises.

However, Fosi said information at his disposal suggests that the maintenance work is currently 95% complete.

Fosi said they are engaging Rand Water to uphold their promise and meet the datelines they have suggested.

“We are certain that our residents will receive portable water soon.”

Fosi said they understand the frustration of the residents.

“We know it is hard to lack water but we plead with residents to be patient and work with their councillors.”

Residents with water are urged to avoid excessive use.
