Angels of the North teaches the importance of making the right decisions and keeping the youth away from drugs.

A local NPO is making a difference in the north community by taking part in combatting drug use among the youth.
The Angels of the North hosted a drug and substance abuse awareness programme on Friday, July 21 for 13- to 19-year-olds.
NPO founder Vitesh Hurinanthan says that the programme after observing the devastating impact of drug use in the community that does not only affect individuals but families and friends as well.
“The programme was specifically made for the youth that is in their teenage years because the drug scourge we found all around our area has started to infiltrate children.
“Whereby 10-year-olds have become dependent on using but also we are trying to put our effort to prevent those that haven’t started to not start, as prevention is better than cure,” says Hurinanthan.
The programme/workshop is said to be based on a six weeks programme that involves the following topics:
– Drug Abuse and its impacts
– Physical and mental health issues
– Teenage pregnancy
– Educational teachings and opportunities.
– Bullying among the youth.
“Our programme is not limited to the above as it may vary according to the community,” he says.
The NPO has partnered with the FF Plus and other partners, as it is planning to reach out to other communities in the future.
It plans to incorporate families affected by drug use and also tries to enrol a lot of the youth on the EPWP programme via the Tshwane metro.
“In combating drug use among the youth, parents also need to make an effort in being more active in their children’s lives,” said Hurinanthan.
“They need to be more aware of who is going on in their children’s lives, as peer pressure still exists.”
Hurinanthan adds that if parents need help with their children, they can contact the organisation or go to the Angels of the North Foundation centre.
“All the youth should partake in the full programme as all themes interlink with each other,” Hurinanthan concludes.
