Date for reopening of crematorium to be announced in August

Crematorium users are said to have to find private alternatives in the meantime.

The Tshwane metro recently stated that it will communicate when crematory services will resume in August.

Its crematory services at Rebecca Street Crematorium, in Philip Nel Park, west of Pretoria were suspended on July 14.

The suspension was due to maintenance work and other related activities that needed to be carried out.

The metro stated that it was required to meet the standards and requirements of environmental compliance.

“The closure was part of the city’s annual maintenance programme. The furnaces need to go through thorough maintenance to meet the standard and requirements of among others environmental compliance,” metro spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo previously told Rekord.

“Around August 2023, the city will be able to indicate the projected date by which the operations will resume at the crematorium.”

The metro said that the gas used and the content of emissions must be within acceptable standards before services can resume.

When asked if the metro has any contingency plans to support residents who wish to use the crematory services, Mashigo stated that “unfortunately, the option that will have to be explored is going private”.

Being the only crematory owned by the metro in all of Tshwane, Rebecca Street is a common choice for people that require the service. The metro could not indicate if it was planning to build another one.

“The Hindu community uses the crematorium effectively and of course, there are other individuals within other communities that prefer using it. The opening of other crematoriums will be subject to budget availability,” Mashigo concluded.

The metro apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused.
