The declaration of sign language as an official language in South Africa will see more inclusivity for individuals with hearing impairments and deafness.
This is according to deaf Pretoria resident Jacobus Myburgh, an activist for deaf awareness.
Myburgh said this was a major step towards promoting the rights of deaf and hearing-impaired individuals.
Having overcome numerous challenges throughout his life, Myburgh has found strength and success through sign language.
He said his achievements alone are a testament to what people living with a disability can overcome.
Myburgh said his hearing problems began when he was just three years old.
“Doctors were baffled by my ear infections, which at times included 26 different bacterial infections that were usually only found in severe burn wounds as a child.”
Myburgh underwent three major ear operations to clear the infections and fluid build-up in his eustachian tube, but despite receiving grommets on many occasions, they were not successful.
With this, he had to endure societal judgements, bullying and misconceptions but that made him stronger.
Despite his ailment, Myburgh obtained three tertiary education qualifications, including two journalism qualifications and a Bachelor of Laws degree Cum Laude.
He is currently employed as a candidate attorney and is working on his second law qualification.
Myburgh said the recognition of sign language is a historic move.
“Our communication form being recognised as an official language provides greater access to information and services.”
He said he feels that this is a democratic achievement for the whole deaf society.
“This has brought inclusivity and all people can now communicate without fear of discrimination.
“My disability does not define who I am. It does not define what I am capable of and what I can achieve.”
