Wollies animal shelter pleads for donations to manage influx of animals

Despite the shelter reaching maximum capacity, they are still eager to help and cannot turn away any animals in need of help.

The Wollies Animal Shelter in the north of Pretoria is struggling financially as the number of animals being surrendered to it continues to rise.

The shelter is in need of donations to help ensure the animals in its care are provided with the necessary food, medical care, and living space.

While the shelter works hard to find homes for the animals under its care, growing demand is putting a strain on resources.

Charmaine Swanepoel the director of the shelter, is pleading with animal lovers to foster or adopt animals.

Swanepoel attributed the increase in animal surrender to the country’s economic situation, which has made it difficult for many people to afford to care for their pets.

“The situation is made even more challenging by the fact that the shelter is home to over a thousand animals, with more being surrendered every day,” she explained.

The increasing number of animals in the shelter’s care has placed a heavy burden on the shelter’s resources, particularly with regard to food supply and veterinary care.

“Despite the shelter reaching maximum capacity, we cannot turn away any animals in need of help,” Swanepoel emphasised.

She acknowledged the impact of the increased number of animals on the shelter’s budget.

She expressed empathy for the animals and her determination to do everything possible to help them.

“All our kennels are filled to the brim,” she said.

Swanepoel said with regard to their needs, any donation, whether it is food, blankets, or kennels, is most welcome and will never go to waste.

“Our veterinary bill is a huge challenge, and any payment towards our bill will be greatly appreciated,” she said.

She thanked all the sponsors who continue to help the shelter.

For adoptions, fostering and donations for the Wollies animal shelter call the office on 079 916 4602 or 067 356 3895 for more info.
