Renovated Jubilee hospital unit reopens

MEC of Health says the transformation of this unit was a direct response to the challenges it previously faced due to structural limitations.

The refurbished Jubilee Hospital accident and emergency (A&E) unit was officially reopened last week.

The unit was in for renovation for six months from December 2022 to June 2023.

Patients were moved to other sections of the hospital during renovation.

Over the years, the infrastructure in the unit deteriorated and was no longer adequate to service the growing need of those depending on the facility for services, according to Gauteng Health.

MEC for health and wellness Nkomo Ralehoko said the transformation of this unit is a clear testament to the department’s ongoing commitment to improving medical care accessibility and quality.

“The renovations are expected to have a significant positive impact on the quality and accessibility of healthcare services provided within the facility,” she said.

Nkomo added that the importance of the renovation is emphasised by the fact that the unit currently attends to over 30 000 patients annually.

“This high number of patients seeking care reflects both the unit’s capacity and its essential role in providing healthcare services to a wide-ranging population.”

The renovation ensures that essential medical services are readily available and delivered to the highest standards.

Nkomo said the unit is expected to create a positive ripple effect, enhancing the overall healthcare experience for both patients and healthcare professionals involved.

The enhancements that were made to the unit, are:

– Resuscitation area which serves as a critical zone where swift and precise medical interventions can make all the difference between life and loss.

– Triage area which serves as the gateway to the patient’s journey through the medical facility.

– Frosted glass installations to prioritise patient privacy, respect their dignity and establish an environment where patients feel valued and secure.
