Mamelodi women mind their health this Women’s Month

“It’s a great initiative, especially for some of us who are not health conscious,” says local resident Susan Ndwendwa.

As part of the celebration of Women’s Month, Ubuhle Sisonke organisation promotes a healthy lifestyle by hosting aerobics classes in Mamelodi.

Sisonke founder Monica Choko told Rekord that the idea came after she noticed that many elderly citizens had nothing to do during the day, especially on weekends.

“One of the main reasons for us to have this is to promote a healthy way of living and counter many sicknesses.

“One important reason was also to prove wrong the notion that mortality rates were higher in township areas as opposed to suburbia,” Choko added.

She further said the organisation did not discriminate, adding that it welcomed both males and females young and old.

One of the participants Steve Kekana said the team was making a huge difference, especially to them as community members.

“When I joined the aerobics team a year ago, my weight was not pleasing but I can safely say I am a better person.

“In every event we have, the point is to reach a wider audience than we already have to make this a lifestyle,” Kekana added.

He said the weekend session sought to hype the event and make residents interested in joining the class for a better, healthier way of living.

Susan Ndwendwa of Tsamaya Road in Mamelodi said aerobics was something that was foreign to townships but said she wouldn’t mind joining the group.

“It’s a great initiative, especially for some of us who are not health conscious, who eat everything and don’t even bother ourselves to even walk a kilometre.

“I am definitely going to be joining them on Saturday as this would promote good health, and I personally would be doing it to rejuvenate my skin,” said Ndwendwa.

Richard Mashaba of Mamelodi East told Rekord that he doesn’t see himself doing that kind of sport, especially in public.

“I am not interested in doing such things, especially as a man. Mine is to go find employment for me to feed my family, not wasting time in such activities.

“I am not against other men joining aerobics but I don’t think men should join things that were mostly done by our wives,” concluded Mashaba.

According to Choko, Sisonke would be hosting another outdoor aerobics marathon on August 19 at Denlyn Mall.
