Metrorail suspends service between Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa after derailment

Commuters are urged to find other alternative modes of transport.

Metrorail train service between Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa has been temporarily suspended after a goods train derailed at Hercules station in Pretoria North.

Train commuters are informed that no train service is operational this morning peak between Pretoria-Mabopane and Dewildt-Hercules.

Metrorail spokesperson Lilian Mofokeng said freight train number 1410 derailed at Hercules in the early hours of Wednesday morning, August 16.

“Commuters travelling on the Mabopane and Dewildt lines are advised to seek alternative transport until further notice as technical teams are clearing the accident scene to allow safe movement of trains,” said Mofokeng.

Metrorail commuter, Samson Maimela said that when he went to Mabopane station early this morning, he was told that the trains are currently suspended.

“The news of the train derailment affected us this morning as we were rushing to catch the train to work but it did not come,” he said.

Linda Skhosana said that since the Tshwane bus service was suspended, she had been using the train and the suspension of the train service will have a big impact on her ability to travel to work.

“As commuters, we are hoping that the team clears the railway after they are done attending to the train derailment issue because we no longer have money to pay for other modes of transport. We depend on the train because it’s cheaper,” she said.

The Gauteng Metrorail management apologised to commuters and employers for the inconvenience caused.
