Local drum majorettes qualify to compete in Europe

However, the Mamelodi East drum majorettes team needs funds to travel to Croatia for the International Association of Majorette in Croatia in August next year.

A local drum majorettes team wants to fly the South African flag high at the International Association of Majorette-sport in Croatia next August.

The Talent Angels Team (TAT) drum majorettes of Mamelodi East recently qualified to participate at international level at the National Federation of Dance Drill cheerleading majorettes of SA.

Founder and coach Angel Tshabalala said the team was participating in the national majorettes competition at the Wynberg military base stadium in Cape Town from July 6 to 12.

Tshabalala said the team did well and won in all the categories they participated in the open dance mix. They came third winning the pom defile, show, open, duos, trios and solo categories.

However, the TAT need financial assistance to take part in the international competition for 30 members.

“The team gives girls and boys from our different communities an opportunity for enjoyment, empowerment and the promotion of self-esteem through the medium of dance, as well as training professional dancers and developing a unique, indigenous dance company,” said Tshabalala.

“Though the competition is next year, the TAT is urgently seeking sponsors to provide a safe, contained and positive environment for children as they come from different backgrounds.

These young girls have discovered that their passion is being a majorette.

It has given them something to work towards and learning about team spirit.”

Founded as an NPO in 2003, TAT is committed to enhancing the quality of life for underprivileged communities through the provision of a cohesive and sustainable programme of integrated and quality development services.

“The team’s vision is to accommodate and give unlimited young ladies in our surrounding area the opportunity to participate in drum majorettes, gymnastic cheerleading, Sarafina, cultural dance, beauty contest and drill dance,” she said.

Tshabalala said they want to build up the self-confidence of the girls, teach them how to be more disciplined, improve their concentration and form them into a well-established team.

“They have been working extremely hard and shown their dedication and passion for this sport in a very short period,” she said.

“It is our goal as a drum majorettes team to build a lasting relationship with anyone who wishes to be involved in the development of young ladies in the sport and wish to make our sponsor proud. We would like to contribute successfully to the marketing and visibility of the sponsor to a wide audience.”

TAT is looking for companies who wish to partner with it to help it achieve its dreams.

The team will need sponsorship for tracksuits, t-shirts, jazz shoes (masantasi), socks, kit bags, large drill uniforms, pom-poms, mace, single flags, double flags, batons and drums.

Anyone who wishes to help can call Angel Tshabalala on 082 256 8995 or 081 737 3262.
