The recommended treatment plan would commonly include a combination of treatments such as:

  • surgery,
  • reconstructive surgery,
  • radiation therapy,
  • chemotherapy and
  • hormonal therapy.

SUPPORT SERVICE

Pre-operative care for breast surgery patients

Once the surgeon discussed the various treatment options with the patient, the specialised nurse practitioner will assist the patient with:

  • pre-operative counselling and information;
  • support services such as psychologists;
  • emotional support, including family.

Post-operative general care

After the patient’s surgery, the specialised nurse practitioner will be on hand to assist with possible complications from the procedures as well as tips to ensure optimal recovery.

The specialised nurse practitioner will assist with the following:

  • support in hospital as well as at home;
  • general discharge advice;
  • assistance and instructions on drain care and wound care;
  • up-to-date information on external services such as external prosthesis, wig, suppliers, undergarments, etc.;
  • telephonic follow-up post-operative to check on patients’ progress; and
  • any other questions patients may have.

All information will be handled with the strictest of confidence and personal attention is given to patients during the different stages of treatment.
