Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant’s power restored

The treatment plant is once again receiving power from the refurbished Pyramid substation after it was damaged in a fire during a storm.

The Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant is once again operating with power from the newly rebuilt Pyramid substation.

It previously received power from the Bon Accord power line.

Power was cut after the substation caught fire during a storm. During the rebuilding process, the power supply to the Rooiwal plant was temporarily rerouted to a refurbished previously underused power line.

Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the rebuilding project, involved demolishing the damaged structure, panels, feeder cables, circuit breakers, 132kV isolator, and key transformer components.

“The power has now been switched back to the original supply from Pyramid substation [on Thursday] after the city’s technicians confirmed that electricity at the substation is stable,” Bokaba said.

“Aeration required for biological treatment of wastewater will be started in phases under the supervision of a contractor due to the sensitivity of specialised equipment.

“The full restoration and working of all infrastructure at the Rooiwal plant is receiving the necessary attention to ensure continuous treatment of wastewater,” he said.
