A Re Yeng buses suspended again

Unrest in the metro has left bus commuters stranded once more.

On Wednesday, the Tshwane metro suspended the A Re Yeng bus services yet again.

The news comes two days after it announced the resumption to commuters on Monday.

The municipality announced the suspension of its services on social media.

“Please note that buses were pelted with stones, operations are suspended with immediate effect.

“Commuters are urged to use alternative transport,” the metro said.

The bus operation has been suspended since the inception of the strike by workers affiliated to Samwu.

Late last month, Tshwane MMC for roads and transport Katlego Mathebe promised residents buses would resume this month.

Initially, the buses were supposed to start operating on October 1, however, due to intimidation and threats from workers, the service could not resume.

At the time, Mathebe said the metro would continue taking disciplinary action against all illegal strikers to restore bus operations.

Mamelodi resident Mami Mphuthi told Rekord the municipality knew of the ongoing protest, yet it chose to resume bus operations.

Mphuthi said the municipality was putting people’s lives at risk.

“The municipality knew the strike was not over. What made them resume services if they had no plans of protecting drivers and commuters?” she asked angrily.

Ronald Mokgethi from Monument Park said it was high time that citizens stood up against the unruly workers who were hell-bent on sabotaging the municipality.

“Let’s show them our lives are not dependent on them and that this misbehaviour of theirs will soon come to an end.

“They have been let loose for far too long. There’s no way we are not going to receive services,” said Mokgethi.
