Heatwave expected to last throughout the week, possible rain relief on Sunday

Friday is expected to be the hottest day at 36-38ºC.

Pretoria is currently experiencing a heatwave which is expected to carry on into the weekend.

Residents can expect a blistering week over the World Cup Final as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) announced that the heatwave is expected to last the whole week.

The heatwave is causing high temperatures over Gauteng in the eastern parts of North West Province and the southwestern Bushveld.

SAWS said the situation is being monitored and the heatwave may carry on to Saturday, as only a slight decrease in temperatures is expected on the day.

The maximum for Wednesday, October 25 was expected to reach 34-36ºC and it seems it is getting hotter as the week progresses.

Thursday’s maximum temperatures were expected to reach 33-35ºC.

Friday is the day to especially look out for, as maximum temperatures were expected to soar to 36-38ºC.

Saturday is predicted to see a decrease, but only slightly with expected temperatures of 34-36ºC.

Rainfall is expected on Sunday in the area, as temperatures are predicted to decrease significantly to 25-26ºC.

The rain is expected to continue into Monday with another significant temperature drop at 20-21ºC.

The rain is expected to subside by Tuesday, with temperatures expected to rise to 25-26ºC

“Ensure you stay hydrated throughout,” advised SAWS forecaster, Vanetia Phakula.

“If you can, stay indoors. If you have to work or be outside, make sure you are in a shaded area. If there isn’t a shaded area available, make sure you take breaks throughout the day,” Phakula said.

Other tips include:

– Take it easy and don’t overexert yourself.

– Only go outside during the coolest time of the day: usually early in the morning and evening.

– Wear loose, lightweight clothing.

– Take cool showers.

– Learn to recognise the signs of heat stroke, which are headache, nausea, dizziness, fainting.
