Police increase visibility at local mall towards festive season
The safety awareness campaign was a reinforcement plan to guarantee safety of consumers, motorists and shops during the festive season.
Mamelodi West police, together with the local CPF and crime prevention wardens, have promised to keep consumers safe at shopping malls towards the festive season.
On Friday, they held a safety awareness campaign about gender-based violence and “trio crimes” at Denlyn Mall.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Daphney Maila said no time should be wasted when it comes to instituting the safety campaign.
She said it was a reinforcement plan to guarantee the safety of consumers, motorists and shops during the festive season.
Maila said 1 000 pamphlets were handed out about GBV and the “trio crimes”.
“The members divided into two groups to reach more consumers and motorists at the mall.”
She said the objective was to reduce GBV-related issues, and pass on safety tips to the community towards the festive season.
“We are looking after the consumers, stores at shopping malls and the public at large by increasing the number of patrollers at the malls to prevent crime at this time of the year.”
Maila said consumers this year should not stress about crime, because there would be more police visibility. “[At] each corner at the mall you will see patrollers.”
She said the public was also advised to be careful when shopping at malls.
The police warned residents about armed and common robbery, assault, theft from vehicles, house burglaries and robberies at ATMs.
Maila also said the police and CPF visibility campaigns at malls would continue throughout the festive season.
“The manager of Denlyn Mall shared words of gratitude,” she added.
Residents were also warned about public drinking, drunk driving and alcohol abuse.
Maila said theft from motor vehicles increased during the festive season, because of increased shopping.
She warned that alcohol abuse led to GBV and domestic violence.
Consumers were advised to approach mall security or police at the mall when they needed assistance.
The police encouraged residents to report crimes to the 10111 police line.
Station commander Brigadier Kervin Solomons thanked all police who took part in the safety awareness campaign.
