Rosslyn police encourage locals to report crime such as GBV and rape

Victims are encouraged not to withdraw cases after reporting them to the police.

Rosslyn police urged the community to report crimes such as rape and gender-based violence (GBV) as they may contribute to lifestyle diseases, such as HIV/Aids, and sexually transmitted illnesses.

This was said during a wellness day at the Rosslyn clinic on Friday.

Police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mabasa urged victims to report first-hand to the police in a case of rape.

“Victims will be referred to the relevant department for further assistance as well as the prevention of the spread of HIV, with the assistance of the Department of Health.”

The wellness event included various activities and opportunities for officers and community members to relax and take care of themselves, including health screenings, counselling, and mental health support.

She said this campaign focused on re-emphasising the community the importance of looking after their well-being by taking caution about the food that they eat to avoid illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

“The wellness campaign also focused on sexual and lifestyle diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV.”

Mabasa said pamphlets on victim empowerment, drugs and substance abuse, crime prevention safety tips and children’s rights were also handed out to the members of the public who were visiting the clinic and to other stakeholders.

Police in attendance were also sensitised on the importance of improving their well-being so that they can better serve the community.

Mabasa encouraged victims not to withdraw cases as it deters the law from taking its course.

She said all police stations have a victim-friendly room which provides an opportunity for victims of intimate violence (GBV, child abuse, sexual offences and domestic violence) to make their statements in private, in a non-threatening environment.
