Heavy downpours for Pretorians on Tuesday

An Orange Level 5 warning was issued, which comes with severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours, which may lead to flooding.

The South African Weather Service has warned of the possibility of severe thunderstorms in Pretoria and Gauteng on Tuesday.

Weather service spokesperson Senelisiwe Twala said the Capital City could expect thundershowers throughout the day.

“We have received an Orange Level 5 warning, which comes with severe thunderstorms producing strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail, and heavy downpours, which may lead to flooding and damage of settlements and infrastructure,” Twala warned.

She further said Wednesday’s weather conditions are expected to be partly cloudy, through to the weekend.

Twala continued to say these severe conditions will also result in localised flooding in low-lying bridges and damage to settlements.

Here are some safety tips that can assist while driving in the rain:

– Increase your safe following distance by an extra 5 – 6 seconds.

– Reduce your speed. This will help you navigate large water puddles and potential hidden debris on flooded roadways.

– Make sure your headlights are switched on.

– Take note of trees, powerlines, and street poles while driving.

– Be cautious of any pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, and animals while driving in harsh weather conditions.

– If you can, delay your trip until the heavy rainfall subsides.

– Buckle up!

– Drive only when you need to. Otherwise, please stay at home.
