Leaking pipe in north still not fixed since metro strike started

The slow pace of service delivery is being blamed on the months-long strike by Tshwane’s working force.

Tshwane residents are still feeling the brunt of the four-month-long strike by metro officials as they battle to receive service delivery on time.

Arcadia resident Maria Taylor reported a leaking water pipe that the metro had failed to attend to.

“I reported the leaking pipe on the corner of Stanza Bopape Street and Steve Biko Road to the municipality four months ago, and the metro has not bothered to fix it. I honestly don’t have an idea of what one must do to get these things sorted,” said Taylor.

She said the municipality could no longer use the strike as an excuse for its failure to render services to the community.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo told Rekord the municipality was aware of the leak, adding that it remained concerned about it.

“The water loss and leaks included contribute immensely to non-revenue generating activities, hence the worry by the municipality’s management.

“The unresolved and prolonged existence of the leak has been exacerbated by the illegal and unprotected strike, which lasted for months,” said Mashigo.

He said the metro was extremely satisfied with the tangible progress it was making in reducing the alarming number of complaints that the region had, despite the strike action.

“With threats and intimidation actions being less in recent times, the leak will be addressed as it forms part of the priority list.”

Taylor’s concern comes amid the escalating water crisis in Gauteng.

However, Rand Water COO Mahlomola Mehlo has ruled out the possibility of having water shedding in the near future.

“Any plans of water shedding? From a Rand Water point of view, no. From a customer’s point of view, I do not know. I cannot speak on behalf of the customers, they’ve got their own authority and their own water bodies,” he said.
