Crime stats: fewer Tshwane stations in top-30 serious crime hotspots

The Akasia, Sunnyside, Pretoria central and Brooklyn police stations remaining in the national top 30 serious crime plagued stations.

Four stations in Tshwane made the top 30 in the country for serious crime.

This was revealed in the second quarter of national crime statistics, released on Friday (November 17). The statistics stem from cases reported to and detected by the police from July 1 to September 30.

No Tshwane station made it to the national top 30 for attempted murder cases.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele said there’s a national decrease in murder and this shows that the targeting of crime hotspots must be maintained and further strengthened.

“It is also through our intensified national policing approach to prevent and combat crime during high-density Operation Shanela, that we are beginning to break even and seeing decreases in certain crime categories.”

He said Operation Shanela, which is in its sixth month, is effective and continues to be altered guided by crime pattern analysis.

“While the crime figures for July to September this year show an increase in contact crimes, the drop in sexual offences, trio crimes, contact-related and property-related crimes as well as other serious crimes, is encouraging.”

The tracking and tracing of most wanted suspects has also been prioritised in conjunction with everyday policing at the station level.

Here are the stats at some of the stations that placed in the national top 30.

Akasia police station:
– Five more murder-related cases compared to the previous quarter
– One case of robbery of cash in transit
– 6% decrease in cases of theft out of or from motor vehicles
– 17% increase in cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Brooklyn police station recorded:
– 4 murder-related cases fewer
– 2.9% increase in common robbery with 178 active cases
– 4 fewer sexual assault-related offences compared to the previous quarter of the same period
– 70% decrease in car hijacking cases with only three active cases

Lyttelton police station:
– 13% decrease in common assault cases
– 40% increase in shoplifting cases
– 76.7% increase in drug-related crimes

Pretoria Central:

– kidnapping cases have increased by 6 compared to last quarter to 16

The crime statistics also revealed the following of other police stations:

Olievenhoutbosch and Akasia stations are still placed in the national top-30 stations plagued by the trio of crimes – hijacking, house and business robberies.

Soshanguve ranked 10th in the country and highest in Gauteng for public violence

The Akasia station is ranked 10th nationally for cash-in-transit crime.
