Local French school hosts second annual Christmas market

The school recorded 1 000 students this year and the director of the school believes there is still a desire to learn French.

This Saturday, residents were treated to a unique European market when the Alliance Française de Pretoria hosted its Christmas market on its Sunnyside campus.

From bread, books, art and other brand new attractions everyone was thrilled with what was on offer during the French Christmas Market.

Director of Alliance Française de Pretoria, Sébastien Plot said the market was held for the second year and aims to provide a platform for mostly French cuisine but for South African works as well.

“The idea is to promote French food as there are plenty of stalls selling cheeses, rolls, and everything else French but also to promote South African craft, we have a good 10 stands that are promoting South African craft. It’s Christmas soon, so many ex-pats will be travelling back home for the holidays and would like to buy souvenirs for their loved ones there,” Plot said.

Plot said the school reached 1 000 students this year though the tumultuous South African economy caused challenges. He believes that even though wallets are tightening, there is still a desire to learn French in Pretoria and that it is an important language to learn should one want to conduct international business.

“We are hoping that 2024 will be a better year for the school. We want to keep collaborating with companies and conducting more professional training as we believe that it is a huge need here,” Plot concluded.
