New electronic system captures patient health information, reduces waiting times

The implementation of the new system is expected to improve patient waiting times as end-users familiarise themselves with the new system.

Mamelodi Regional Hospital is launching the Health Information System (HIS) Clinical Module this week.

The Department of Health’s Didintle Mkhize said the system allows doctors to electronically capture patient health information, reducing waiting times.

She said the new system is aligned with the Gauteng Department of Health’s initiative, replacing legacy systems Medicom and PAAB, and aims for more efficient healthcare delivery across all facilities in Gauteng.

The new system is introducing the following benefits:

– Facilitates attainment of integrated healthcare requirements.

– Provides GDoH with an enterprise health information system platform integrating core business requirements.

– Ensures adoption of common standards, processes, and flexibility across the GDoH landscape.

The new system across Gauteng offers:

– Accurate, up-to-date and complete information about the patient at the point of care.

– Secure sharing of electronic patient health information with other clinicians.

– Efficient access to patient records, allowing healthcare providers to make informed decisions promptly.

– Data-driven decisions to allocate resources more effectively and implement targeted interventions.

– Reduction of paperwork, leading to reduced waiting times and increased access to healthcare, enabling healthcare personnel to focus on delivering healthcare services.

Mkhize said the implementation of the HIS Clinical Module adopts a phased strategy to mitigate disruptions to service delivery.

The first phase, involving the implementation of patient administration and patient finance and billing, has been completed.

“The second phase is dedicated to deploying the clinical module at 37 hospitals and 35 community health centres,” she said.

Mkhize added that by adopting a strategic approach, implementation is expected to influence patient waiting times as end-users familiarise themselves with the new system.

Anticipated benefits include a noticeable improvement in waiting times by the third week of implementation.

She said: “We appreciate your patience and support during this transformative period at Mamelodi Regional Hospital.

“Patients are encouraged to bring their identification documents when visiting the hospital to facilitate a seamless transition to the new system.”
