‘Lioness roaming in Pretoria is fake news’

Lions are counted at the end and beginning of every shift, says Friends of the Zoo director.

A rumour that had some worried about a lioness that escaped from the Pretoria National Zoo has been dispelled after the sanctuary announced all its lions were accounted for.

This comes after a voice note made the rounds on social media suggesting that a female lion was roaming around Marabastad in Belleombre.

In the note, a man can be heard saying he saw a lioness while on patrol in the area, and both police and zoo officials were searching for it.

However, the Friends of the Zoo director CLL Ge Breytenbach rubbished the information as false.

Breytenbach said there was no truth to the circulating voice note.

“The message being circulated is false information. I have just confirmed with the management of the zoo and I can confirm that all lions are accounted for.

All six female lions in the zoo were accounted for yesterday (Sunday) at the end of the shift and this morning at the beginning of the shift. If there is a lion on the loose, then it’s not from the zoo,” said Breytenbach.

Two years ago, Pretorians had reason to panic when a lion named Kwandwe escaped the Dinokeng Game Reserve and was later captured roaming the north of Pretoria.
