Murder accused declared fit to stand trial

Reports from the psychiatric evaluation declared the murder accused fit to stand trial and the case has been postponed to December 21 for bail application.

A man accused of the murder of his ex-girlfriend has been declared fit to stand trial in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court.

Tiyane Mashaba (37) of Khutsong, Mamelodi had been under 30-day psychiatric evaluation.

Senior prosecutor Advocate Anne-Marie Bendeman said the result of the evaluation was that the accused was declared fit to stand trial.

“The reports from the psychiatric evaluation, declared the murder-accused fit to stand trial and the case has been postponed to December 21 for bail application,” said Bendeman.

Mashaba stands accused of the murder of second-year Unisa law student Mmanuku Tauyatswala (26), denying her of a bright future as a lawyer.

On June 3, Mashaba was arrested when Tauyatswala’s naked body was found in his bedroom in Mamelodi with multiple stab wounds to the upper body.

The ANC Women’s League and Mamelodi GBV Brigades protested outside court carrying placards on which they demanded that Mashaba not be granted bail, and declared support for the victim’s family.

Her aunt, Matlhodi Madiseng (76), said she wanted “justice for our daughter”.

“We are also going to petition the court to deny the accused bail. We are pleading with the justice system to speed up the process.”

“The family has to travel from as far as Limpopo to be in court to follow the case.”

“We are tired of GBV in Mamelodi.”

Madiseng asked the court to make an example of Mashaba and hand down a sentence that permanently removes him from society.
