Blood service calls for donors to come forward

The path to a long healthy life is through doing good to others: donate blood this festive season.

As scholars would say, a good deed makes the world a better place.

This resonates better with the plea of the SA National Blood Service (SANBS) as it calls all blood donors to come forward to donate a pint as stock levels were decreasing.

Spokesperson Thabo Mboweni said the low level posed a high risk to patients who needed blood.

Mboweni said there has been a consistent decline in blood donation since the streamlining of donor registration started.

He said the bloodstock was currently sitting at only 1.8 days’ supply, a critically low level.

“This blood shortage may affect the lives of numerous individuals reliant on blood transfusions. The technical issues experienced with the registration have since been resolved, and donors can look forward to an enhanced donor experience.

SANBS senior marketing, communication and brand manager Thandi Mosupye said donating blood was important so donors needed to be constant.

“As we approach December, our donations are expected to decline due to the closure of workplaces and schools. Should this decline continue, our ability to meet the needs of patients will be severely negatively impacted,” Mosupye.

She assured donors that donating blood was seamless and only took 30 minutes.

“SANBS urges all eligible and healthy individuals to visit their nearest donation site and contribute to this life-saving cause. Every donation matters and holds the power to save lives, and each contribution is a lifeline to someone desperately in need.”

She said all new donors should bring a copy of their ID, be between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh more than 50kg and be in good health.
