Faerie Glen star pops into the music industry with self-composed song

A surprise lay in store for Nina Loubser (17) from Faerie Glen when she attended a gala evening at an international talent competition.

Faerie Glen’s redhead music star, Nina Loubser, earned herself a scholarship at the prestigious NewYork Conservatory of Dramatic Arts recently by singing her self-composed song, Makeup.

The platform was the iPOP talent competition in Los Angeles during the last week of December.

Even though she was spotted and called back to perform again by 18 talent scouts, Loubser had no idea that she would earn this accolade.

The competition promotes talent to leading agents, managers, casting directors and music industry professionals.

Stars like Ava Kolker, Stefan Benz, Paulina Olszynski, and Alexis Sanchez were discovered at the iPOP competition.

Loubser said her mother, Angie Loubser, spotted the competition on Facebook.

After an audition with local DMH Agency, she was on her way to Los Angeles in California as one of 2 000 hopefuls taking part in the singing, dancing, acting and modelling categories.

The agency is one of the competition’s talent scouts.

Loubser performed her original song, Make-up to the loud acclaim of the judges.

She was third runner-up in the highly popular singing category.

Loubser discovered her love for performing in her primary school, Bronberg Akademie.

She was encouraged by teachers to sing more often and perform regularly in front of people.

“It gets my adrenalin going to have an audience,” said the Hoërskool Garsfontein learner.

After being cast in several musicals, in primary as well as high school, she started writing songs.

“At first I wrote for myself, but quickly experienced I like writing more about other people and their experiences,” said Loubser.

Her song, Makeup, was written because she felt she did not fit in with the beautiful crowd at her school.

She soon discovered she was not the only teenager feeling on the fringe of the popular crowd.

“I felt I did not belong because I wore no make-up and my hair was short,” remarked Loubser.

She usually picks up her guitar to put a melody to words once she is satisfied she has given a voice to people who are unable to express themselves.

“This creative moment will happen when my feelings resonate with theirs,” said Loubser.

As the six days at the competition was all about taking part and going to talent bootcamp, Loubser experienced a little of Tinseltown’s glitz and glamour.

She however was able to attend a New Year’s Eve function at Disneyland to welcome 2024 with fireworks.

“I made friends with so many talented people from countries such as Turkey and Romania,” said Loubser.

She will finish her matric year before thinking about taking up the offer to go to New York.

For now, Pretoria’s emerging star is focusing on her school work, working on her rising star talents at Second Life Music School, and preparing for her role in Shrek in July at the Atterbury Theatre.

“Singing and performing, and to give a voice to the voiceless with my songs, will always remain my passion.”

Loubser has officially published her first song Makeup for everyone to listen to. Click here to listen to the song:
