Klapperkop’s baby zebra finally gets a name

The naming competition for the baby zebra ran from 12 to 22 December 2023, with over 300 entries received from animal and nature lovers.

The baby zebra at Pretoria east’s Klapperkop nature reserve finally has a name.

This comes after the Tshwane metro ran a naming competition, with the winner getting a prize of a two-night’ stay for four at Rietvlei nature reserve.

According to the Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink, the baby zebra is named Kamari.

“The winning name Kamari is of African Swahili origin and it means ‘the moon’,” Brink said.

The naming competition ran from December 12 to 22 2023, and received more than 300 entries from animal and nature lovers.

The baby zebra was born in November last year at Klapperkop, one of the city’s popular outdoor destinations.

Brink said the competition was tight with many fun names “for our Klapperkop foal”. Close contenders included Jabari, Khumba, Kunye and Oreo.

Eleven-year-old Arielle from Sunnyside won the naming competition, describing the baby zebra as a beautiful and graceful animal like the moon in the night sky.

Winner, Arielle from Sunnyside, described the baby zebra as a beautiful and graceful animal like the moon in the night sky.

“What I like about zebras is that their stripes are unique like fingerprints and easily blend in the wild and I’m amazed that they sleep standing, it’s very interesting,” the 11-year-old said.

Brink expressed his gratitude to everyone who entered the competition.

“We liked all your names and we appreciate your participation.”

He encouraged residents to support and visit nature reserves in Tshwane.

Here are nature reserves people can visit in Tshwane:

– Bronkhorstspruit

– Faerie Glen

– Groenkloof

– Moreleta Kloof

– Rietvlei

– Wonderboom

He said Tshwane’s nature reserves boast a variety of wildlife, such as buffalo, rhino and cheetah, and some offer game drives to visitors.
