A man is in hospital after he was shot in the neck during a side-of-the-road smoke break north of Pretoria.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the man and his three passengers were en route from Montana to Boksburg when they stopped near the Zambezi tollgate on January 27 around 21:00.

“As they went through the tollgate they stopped on the side of the road.”

Van Dyk said the man had stopped for his wife to smoke.

He said after they had climbed out of the vehicle, unknown people accosted the remainder.

“The assailants didn’t notice the woman standing outside the vehicle. The next moment she heard a gunshot and saw her husband fall.”

Van Dyk said the assailants demanded cellphones from the other passengers but fled the scene on foot before their victims could comply.

He said the victim was transported to Steve Biko hospital for treatment and police are investigating a case of attempted murder.

He said the man suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and a 9mm cartridge was retrieved from the scene and booked in as evidence.
